Know where the tour starts before you book it.

Every tour on this site is labelled with its departure area — Victoria, Campbell River, Telegraph Cove, Ucluelet and so on — worked out from the operator's own meeting-point instructions and Viator's destination data, not just the title. Tours that start in Vancouver or Seattle and cross for the day are kept in a separate section so a Vancouver hotel pickup never looks like an island departure. Victoria to Tofino is about five hours by road, so the departure point is the first thing to check.

By BC Ferries from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay (for Victoria) or from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay or Tsawwassen to Duke Point (for Nanaimo), each around 1½ to 2 hours on the water; reserve a vehicle in summer. By seaplane or helicopter from downtown Vancouver to downtown Victoria or Nanaimo in about 35 minutes. From Seattle on the Victoria Clipper fast ferry, or from Port Angeles on the MV Coho. It depends on what you came for. Whale watching runs roughly March to October; grizzly viewing from Campbell River is late August to mid-October; the northern resident orcas at Telegraph Cove are a July-to-September story; storm watching in Tofino and Ucluelet is November to February; salmon run up the rivers in October and November. June and September have the best balance of open operators, dry weather and room to move. Winter is quiet but not dead: Victoria is Canada's mildest city and the Pacific coast is at its most dramatic.

Not for Victoria, where the harbour, the old town, the cruise terminal and most tour departures are walkable and Butchart Gardens has a shuttle. For anything north of the Cowichan Valley — Tofino, the Comox Valley, Campbell River, Telegraph Cove — yes, or a guided multi-day trip. There is no passenger rail, intercity buses are limited, and none of the trailheads or marinas outside the cities are on transit.

Victoria for a short trip, whale watching and Butchart. Nanaimo if you arrive on the Horseshoe Bay ferry and are heading north or west. Parksville or Qualicum for a beach holiday or a stopover on the way to the coast. Tofino or Ucluelet for the open Pacific — plan three nights for the drive. Campbell River for grizzlies.
